On January 20 1960 Frank Sinatra Dean Martin Sammy Davis Jr Peter Lawford and Joey Bishop performed together at the Copa Room of the Sands Hotel in Las Vegas while simultaneously filming Ocean's Eleven during the day. The shows were unannounced. The audience included Marilyn Monroe Shirley MacLaine and half of Hollywood. Nobody knew they were witnessing the most important moment in casino entertainment history.
What happened at the Sands Copa Room in those years created the template for casino entertainment that every performer every residency and every casino resort has drawn from ever since. The sophistication. The wit. The glamour. The sense that anything could happen and usually did. Frank Sinatra did not just perform at the Sands. The 500 Club on Missouri Avenue — owned by Frank Sinatra's closest friend Paul Skinny D'Amato — was where Sinatra Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr first performed together in the early 1950s.
